A Guide to Child Halloween Costumes

October 5th, 2009

My favorite holiday is upon us again: Halloween. I love several things about Halloween. it is a holiday centered around fun, candy, costumes and parties. That said, costumes might be my favorite part of the holiday. But costumes can be difficult to pick out, especially with how many there are out there to choose from. Nowhere is this worse than with, child Halloween costumes in particular. Here are some helpful things to remember when it comes to child Halloween costumes.

There are a couple of things you need to consider when looking at child Halloween costumes, from a practical standpoint first. First of all, remember that these are child Halloween costumes - and children are notoriously unable to handle discomfort for any stretch of time.

Obviously, an all-wool costume could cause too many frowns, but also consider the fit. If it is too baggy or tight (or, alternatively, if the mask doesn’t fit correctly), which is entirely common when it comes to child Halloween costumes, it will make for an unpleasant night for everyone.

Remember that children trick-or-treat, which is to say, that they will spend most of their time in their costume out-of-doors. In many areas, the end of October is a chilly month, and their costume should reflect the appropriate weather conditions. Finally, make sure that your child Halloween costumes have easy bathroom access… for obvious reasons.

Thanks to the Internet, it is now possible to browse child Halloween costumes without leaving your home. This makes it possible to have your children have a strong say in what costume they wear, without dragging them up and down the aisles at those costume megastores.

Definitely a plus, as trying to put a costume on a child that doesn’t want to wear it is a nightmare. My personal advice on child Halloween costumes is to make them as embarrassing as possible. What do I mean by that? Well, most people keep photo albums of all of their children’s Halloween costumes.

Hopefully, the pictures kept are of your children in child Halloween costumes that make them grimace whenever you take the album out at family reunions and functions, but maybe that is just my personal taste. In conclusion, with the Internet, it is easier to find great child Halloween costumes than ever before.

Just keep in mind a variety of practical concerns when shopping for your costumes, and you should find child Halloween costumes that make you and your children happy this Halloween.

Where to Buy Halloween Costumes

October 5th, 2009

Halloween is just around the corner, and I am really excited. Halloween is definitely my favorite holiday- the combination of scary and spooky, candy and treats, and, of course, the costumes. However, most people see buying Halloween costumes as more of a chore, while I think it is one of my favorite purchases of the year. I love looking at costumes. However, if you are not like me, I can still help. Here are some of the best ways and places to buy Halloween costumes.

The key to buying Halloween costumes is to have a plan. Too many people go into stores without any sense of what they want to be. They spend their whole time looking at everything and have a difficult time choosing from the hundreds, if not thousands, of different options.Instead, take ten or fifteen minutes to think about what costume you wish you could buy. You still have the flexibility to choose something else when you go to the store.

Speaking of going to the store, that is not the only place to buy Halloween costumes. In fact, there are three main locations where you can buy Halloween costumes. The first is the worst place to buy Halloween costumes: any non-costume store. This includes your big box retailers as well as your chain convenience stores. The only reason people buy Halloween costumes from these places is that they forgot to do it. You can be better than that.

The next best place to buy Halloween costumes are the Halloween stores or costume stores. These are great for browsing, if you enjoy that sort of thing. Plus, you get a chance to look at two or three different variations on your costume in person. This is crucial for all you witches and pirates out there.

Finally, my favorite place to buy Halloween costumes is online. There are some disadvantages here; you have to have a specific game plan, browsing cannot be done.

However, you are able to quickly and easily compare prices and save yourself the trouble of going to the cluttered and crowded stores. However you decide to buy Halloween costumes, whether in a store, online, or as an after-thought, take some time to think it through before hand if you really want a costume you will enjoy.

Halloween only comes once a year, so the time is definitely worth it.

A Guide to Baby Halloween Costumes

October 4th, 2009

Halloween is nearly here yet again and that means, among other things, time for Halloween costumes. Now, I love all manners of Halloween costumes, but my favorite costumes might have to be baby Halloween costumes. Why? Baby Halloween costumes might be the cutest thing in the world. While it is a pretty hard thing to mess up, here are some guidelines if you have a little one this holiday season.

The obvious baby Halloween costumes are pretty self-evident. Every baby looks cute dressed up as produce; apples, lettuce, pumpkins (an especially good and appropriate touch), and the ever popular pea in a pod. Not so cute? Broccoli or eggplant.

Another good choice for cute baby Halloween costumes are animals, obviously of the baby animal variety. Some popular ones here include lions, bears, rabbits, cats – basically anything little and furry. Animals to avoid include bats and moose; though strangely, scaly creatures like frogs and snakes make cute animal baby Halloween costumes.

Finally, another easy pick are cartoon characters. Whether from children’s shows (every baby looks good dressed up as Elmo or Cookie Monster or Winnie the Pooh) or children’s movies like Wall-E or Finding Nemo or Ariel The Mermaid Princess, animated characters are a great choice for cute baby Halloween costumes.

These options for baby Halloween costumes are great, because they add cuteness onto the existing cuteness of a baby. But you could add another layer to the baby Halloween costumes by avoiding the easy and cute options. I find it better, personally, to go the opposite route. A baby accountant Halloween costume, for instance, is still cute, but funny and original also. Same goes for a baby doctor. This works esepcially well because regardless of what you dress your baby up as, the cuteness usually overwhelms the costume anyhow.

The final thing that you should consider as well is that baby Halloween costumes represent a rare opportunity for parents: the chance to embarrass your children without seeming cruel. The more embarrassing the Halloween costume, the more embarrassing the Halloween photo album you get to share with your future son or daughter in law. Use this opportunity wisely, as in only a few short years, you won’t be able to dress up your kids in costumes without their input on the matter.

Finally, baby Halloween costumes should not be expensive. Shop around at a variety of costume shops online to compare prices and find the best deals. This is the best way to find great and affordable baby Halloween costumes without leaving the house

The Best Halloween Costumes For Any Age

October 4th, 2009

Some costumes you find are best left for adults, as they can have a sexy theme to them. At times, you may find these in a smaller size, suggesting that teens or children can wear them, but you should firm when you say no. Instead, think of ideas for the best Halloween costumes for any age. This means that any one of any age can wear the costume without someone thinking it is inappropriate or sends the wrong message. You do not want your thirteen year old out there in a French maid outfit, but that does not mean she cannot go in something similar but that is more tasteful.

The common ideas can work for the best Halloween costumes. These would be a vampire, mummy, ghost, or perhaps a witch. These are fun, but not everyone wants to go with something that seems common. What you can do is to make each costume your own. You can take any type of common costume and make it into something that can be called the best Halloween costume going at the moment. You can do this for any age group. Don’t go with the vampire look of the moment – which has probably been inspired by a movie or show – but make up your own style for a really great looking costume.

You may not think that a common theme is the best way to go if you want to come up with the best Halloween costume ideas for an event. No matter what age, you can find some very neat items that are going to blow people away. What you have to do is to make the time to shop around with an open mind. If you have just one idea, you are going to have a hard time finding the items you want. If you have a few ideas or a vague idea, you can see what is out there and then choose the best of what you find for your best Halloween costume ideas.

Children often have the biggest imagination when it comes to coming up with the best Halloween costumes. However, they may also be at an age where they want to do what everyone else they know are going to do. That can be hard when you want them to wear something original. If they want to be the same movie character as everyone else, guide them in a different direction. Ask them if they would like to be a different character from the same movie. At times, this can work. Then you can go about making up a unique version of the costume that they want.

Remember that the best Halloween costumes do not have to be the sexiest ones. Some men and women go the sexy route hoping that will win them a prize as the best costume at a party or event. What matters more is how original and well thought out your costume might be. Some of the best ever made have been ones where you can not tell who is inside because so much of the body is covered. Remember that showing skin may get some attention, but that too has been done to death. Instead, rely on your wit and your sense of humor to come up with your ideas for the best costume ever.

1970’s costumes for a 2009 Halloween

October 1st, 2009

There are many directions to go when choosing 1970’s costumes to wear to a 2009 halloween party. The 1970s were themselves a time of social, cultural and sartorial upheaval, a time when people of subculture began to push more into the mainstream. As a result they began to bring their subcultural modes of not only thought and political activism to the fore, but also their manner of dressing. In a way, 1970’s costumes were a way for people of similar backgrounds, political ideas and desires to identify with others of the same notions. We identify each other, in other words, by the way we look and dress and act.

Some examples of this in terms of 1970’s costumes are swingers, disco dress, and "pimps" in the Superfly mold. Swingers of course, are defined thusly by wikipedia:

Swinging, sometimes referred to as the swinging lifestyle, is "non-monogamous sexual activity, treated much like any other social activity, that can be experienced as a couple."[1] The phenomenon of swinging (or at least its wider discussion and practice) may be seen as part of the sexual revolution of recent decades, which occurred after the upsurge in sexual activity made possible by the prevalence of safer sex practices during the same period. Swinging has been called wife swapping in the past, but this term has been criticized as androcentric (taking a male-oriented point of view) and inaccurately describing the full range of sexual activities in which swingers may take part.

Later, wikipedia goes on to state "In the United Kingdom there was a proliferation of neighborhood groups in the early 1970s — known as "wife swapping" groups — and press articles in later years suggest the peak was 1973–76."

So chosing a swinger outfit as the best of the 1970’s costumes makes some sense. Same with a disco outfit – just look at "Saturday Night Fever" for inspiration, since that is the definitive disco film and provides the best ideas for 1970’s costumes of that mold.

And as I mentioned before, Superfly is another great idea. For those not familiar, Superfly is the story of an inner-city drug dealer who turns against his mafia bosses and goes on a killing spree. Sure, you need a full-length fur coat to pull the costume off, but a creative halloween costumer can come up with that with a bit of effort. Add some gold rings, a cane, sunglasses and fancy hat, and you’re ready to rock with the best of 1970’s costumes.
